DeSantis Announces Arrest of Former Owner of Dog Whose Rescue Went Viral

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the former owner of a dog rescued by the Highway Patrol during Hurricane Milton has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty. The dog, now named “Trooper,” had been chained to a post on the interstate as the storm approached. Officer Orlando Morales filmed the dog stranded in water, unable to escape. The dog’s former owner, Giovanny Garcia, admitted he left the dog behind because he couldn’t find anyone to care for it.

DeSantis condemned the actions as “completely unacceptable” and confirmed that the dog would be adopted. The case has drawn national attention, sparking outrage among animal rights groups. The Leon County Humane Society later reported that the dog was safe at their facility.

In the midst of the storm, DeSantis also clashed with Vice President Kamala Harris, who criticized his hurricane response. DeSantis accused her of politicizing the situation to benefit her campaign, stating he was focused on saving lives and managing the crisis, not playing political games.

President Biden, in contrast, praised DeSantis for his handling of Hurricane Milton, commending his efforts and cooperation with federal agencies. Biden stated that DeSantis had been fully cooperative and had received the necessary support for the storm response.
