Biden Regrets Dropping Out, Claims He Could Have Beaten Trump Again

President Joe Biden reportedly continues to express regret over his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, according to a recent report from The Washington Post. Sources familiar with the matter say Biden believes he could have defeated Donald Trump in the November election, despite challenges like a lackluster debate performance in June and declining approval ratings, which ultimately led to his exit.

Following the June 27 debate, calls within the Democratic Party for Biden to step aside grew louder, with donors pulling back as doubts about his electability increased. On July 21, Biden officially exited the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, giving her just over three months to campaign. Trump went on to defeat Harris by 2.2 million votes.

Privately, Biden has avoided placing blame for the loss solely on Harris, maintaining confidence that he could have won the election himself. He also reportedly regrets appointing Merrick Garland as attorney general, expressing frustration over what he perceives as slow action against Trump and aggressive scrutiny of his son Hunter Biden.

Some Democrats have pointed fingers at party leadership for Harris’s defeat. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman criticized former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, suggesting her influence in pushing Biden to step aside contributed to the party’s struggles. Pelosi, for her part, has argued that Biden’s endorsement of Harris was a mistake and played a role in her loss.

Fetterman further criticized Democratic strategies, warning against alienating Trump supporters by labeling them with terms like “fascists.” He urged the party to focus on more inclusive rhetoric and practical approaches to connect with voters.

Despite reflecting on past decisions and missteps, Biden continues to defend his broader record, with aides noting that his focus was on long-term policies to strengthen the country. As Democrats regroup following the 2024 loss, questions remain about the party’s direction and leadership heading into future elections.
