Adam Schiff Earmarked Millions for Defense Contractors Who Gave to His Campaigns: Report
Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat running for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat, directed over $10 million in taxpayer funds to defense contractors that had donated to his campaigns, according to Politico. Between 2001 and 2007, Schiff earmarked funds for companies like Smiths Detection, Phasebridge, and Eureka Aerospace. Some of these firms were linked to lobbyist Paul Magliocchetti, who later served prison time for illegal contributions.
Critics raised concerns over “pay-to-play” politics, with Steve Ellis from the group “Taxpayers for Common Sense” stating the earmarks created a perception of quid pro quo. Schiff’s rivals, including Katie Porter, subtly criticized the practice, questioning whether taxpayer dollars were being spent responsibly. Porter highlighted that such decisions are often driven by politicians up for reelection rather than neutral experts.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler, a Maryland resident, to temporarily fill Feinstein’s seat, giving her a political advantage in the race. Newsom praised Butler’s background, calling her a champion for reproductive freedom and equal protection.
