Joe Manchin Warns Democratic Party ‘Toxic’ As He Steps Down From US Senate
West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, a lifelong Democrat turned independent, is stepping down after 15 years in the Senate. Reflecting on his departure, Manchin criticized his former party, describing the Democratic brand as “toxic” and overly progressive, prioritizing social issues like LGBTQ+ rights over core concerns like jobs and wages. He also expressed dissatisfaction with Republicans, citing their lack of common sense on gun control and their failure to address mass killings effectively.

Manchin lamented that both parties are too extreme, with Democrats pushing for bans and Republicans advocating minimal restrictions. He criticized the federal budget mismanagement by both sides and argued that the country is unlikely to embrace a far-left political shift.
The senator called for a third political party—a centrist “American Party”—to unite moderate Democrats and Republicans, who he believes are sidelined by partisan extremism. Manchin stressed the importance of centrism in governing and expressed hope for a political movement that would refocus America on unity and practicality.
Manchin, who declined to endorse Vice President Harris or reveal his presidential vote, emphasized that Americans should support their president regardless of political alignment. His decision not to seek re-election followed a challenging race against Republican Governor Jim Justice, who ultimately won, contributing to the GOP’s Senate majority.
Looking ahead, Manchin plans to travel the country to mobilize the political middle and advocate for national unity, aiming to counter the divisive partisanship he sees pulling the country apart.
